    Dreamcast o Playstation 2

No, dai...

If you ask most gamers to list off the current-generation consoles (soon to be last-gen), the will probably recite “PS2, XBox, and Gamecube”, but conveniently neglect the Sega Dreamcast. As many of you know, the Dreamcast was way ahead of its time ” (literally fifteen months before the PlayStation 2 and three years before GameCube …

                  The Technical Explanation

So why does Dead or Alive 2 looks better on Dreamcast? Sure, we can point at the differences, but understanding why these things happen, will help you realise what differences we can expect to see in games on both systems in the future. We broke the issues down into a Q&A format so you can understand each part of the big picture individually.

Q: Why does the PlayStation 2 version flicker and why doesn't this happen on Dreamcast?
A: The Dreamcast is the first console to use a new method of filtering that results in a much more stable image on-screen. Current videogame consoles like the PlayStation 2 do not use this method, and as a result they have flickering, which is present when they display high-resolution games. When displaying a lower resolution image, the flickering is not present... but who wants a lower resolution image?

Q: Why does PlayStation 2 have jagged edge problems and Dreamcast does not?
A: This has to do with the fact that many of the current PS2 games actually use a rendering mode that combines two fields of 640 by 240 pixels to create a full image that is viewable on your TV screen. Now, the pixel scanlines do not sync properly when the camera position of the game moves and this is where jagged edges and aliasing or distortion of texture pattern appears on-screen.

The Dreamcast uses a full 640 by 480 image for every field (2 fields per image on the TV), so its images do not suffer from jagged edges and aliasing to the extent that the PS2 does. Secondly, the filtering method also combines to offer a smoother image that is relatively free of jagged lines.

                  Q: What difference will the 640 x 480 resolution on Dreamcast have to the PlayStation 2's pseudo 640 x 480 (240x2) resolution?
A: Again, rendering using the stated mode that PS2 uses (2 fields of 640 by 240) results in lots of visual problems for the PS2, which are clearly visible even on a small TV using a composite video signal.

The Dreamcast's method of always using a high-resolution image to create the image that is on TV is superior and always results in a cleaner image for your TV. Through the use of the VGA Box peripheral, it also allows Dreamcast users to plug their Dreamcast into a PC VGA monitor for an incredibly clear picture that simply can't be beat. This currently isn't possible for PS2

Q: How does the hardware architecture make a difference for texturing with Dreamcast and PlayStation 2?
A: The Dreamcast uses an incredibly well designed system that allows each one of the components to access their own banks of system RAM without needing to consult or ask for aid from any other chips in the unit. For example, it can call textures directly from its texture memory without needing any assistance. PS2 must always have textures sent to the graphics chip with the aid of the main CPU.

The Dreamcast also contains one of the worlds most advanced graphics chips that has two special features, which the PS2 console does not support. These are deferred rendering and texture compression.

Deferred rendering allows the Dreamcast to reduce the amount of work that the graphics chip has to do considerably. It eliminates visuals that are not seen on the TV (a chair that sits behind a person for example), where traditional renderers would have to draw these visuals or polygons even though they are not seen (the chair in this case). In some games that are very complex (Like Crazy Taxi where you have a street filled with many people, cars and buildings) lots of visuals overlap and the Dreamcast eliminates all unseen polygons and the Dreamcast could be doing 1/10th the work of a traditional renderer (like that in the PS2) in some situations. Because it is also drawing fewer polygons, it requires less bandwidth to move data around. These are both areas where the Dreamcast excels over the PS2.

Texture compression is also a function of the Dreamcast's graphics chip. It can compress textures at a ratio which is typically 5 to 1, so the Dreamcast's 5MB of RAM (8MB- 3MB for frame buffer and display list memory) can be turned into 25MB of textures. This allows Dreamcast games to be visually more detailed in their textures. Worlds have greater detail, walls, floors, people's clothing is more detailed etc. PS2 does not feature this on its graphics chip, and when using local memory for textures the PS2 can have as little as 3MB for textures. Understanding that the PS2 is supposed to push more polygons than the Dreamcast, this can leave it with sparsely detailed worlds in terms of texturing.

Using texture compression and deferred rendering, the Dreamcast effectively has much more bandwidth than the PS2 for transferring data across the system BUS.

Q: What difference does Dreamcast's 8MB of video RAM make against PlayStation 2's 4MB of video RAM?
A: Dreamcast has twice the VRAM of the PlayStation 2, yet it uses deferred rendering and texture compression to maximise the potential and abilities of this available RAM. Additionally, the Dreamcast requires no Z-buffer RAM, as it handles these calculations on-chip, so its memory requirements are further lessened in comparison with PlayStation 2.

The extra memory of the Dreamcast also allows it to store mip mapp levels for all textures, which makes polygons that are drawn in the distance appear more detailed.

Lastly, Dreamcast also features more effects than any the PlayStation 2 in terms of rendering abilities.
                  Some include:
                  - Hardware Bump Mapping
                  - Hardware Translucency sorting
                  - Hardware Modifier volumes
                  - Hardware Full Scene Anti Aliasing
                  - Hardware Z-buffer
                  - Hardware Environmental mapping
                  - Hardware Ice Cream production
